How can I kill Bamboo?

In my backyard, I have some Bamboo up to 1/2 inch in diameter. Most of it smaller. I'm figuring on cutting it off a couple of inches above ground level and then spraying it with something to kill the roots so it does not grow back. I believe this would work but, what can I use that will work? Thank you for your advice!
